McGREW, ABNER G. (DR.)—Died at his home in Geneva, Neb., at 5 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 1909, of heart failure, Dr. Abner G. McGrew, aged 71 years 9 months and 3 days.
Abner G. McGrew, son of Simon and Uree McGrew, was born May 7, 1837, in Pennsylvania. His parents were Quakers. With his parents he removed to Ohio, then to Iowa, where in 1863 he began the practice of medicine at the town of Wyoming. He was married at Keokuk, Ia., February 12, 1863, to Virginia Marion Elgin. They made their home at Wyoming, Ia., until their removal to Geneva, Neb., in 1889, where they have since resided.
The deceased is survived by his wife and the following children, all of the children having been born in the town of Wyoming: Dr. Fred McGrew of LaPorte, Ind., Mrs. Carrie Chapin of Lincoln, Misses Virginia, and Marlon McGrew of Geneva, and Frank McGrew of Callaway, Neb. Two daughters are deceased. Mrs. Lura Loudermilch, and Mrs. Jessie Leavitt. All of the children were at Dr. McGrew’s bedside much of the time during his illness. Dr. Fred McGrew spent last week here, going home ill and not being able to return for the funeral.
Dr. McGrew united with the Presbyterian church in 1865, and has been an ardent and devout Christian ever since. During his twenty years of residence in Geneva, he formed a wide acquaintance and many old friends will read of his death with regret. When the congregational church was established in Geneva, the Presbyterians united with them and Dr. McGrew was among their number and for many years has taken an active interest in the affairs of the church.
All funeral arrangements are in the hands of the Masonic order of which the deceased was a member. The funeral will take place from the residence at 10:30 this morning, and will be conducted by the deceased’s pastor, Rev. Thomas Griffiths.
