John F. Courneya (1930-2012)

Funeral Mass for John F. Courneya, 82, of Wickliffe, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 29840 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe.
Mr. Courneya passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at the Dolan Center in Chardon.
Born March 1, 1930, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., he had been a resident of Lake County for more than 60 years, living in Willoughby before moving to Wickliffe.
John was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wickliffe, Wickliffe Knights of Columbus Council 5405, where he was a past Grand Knight and very active with the Knights of Columbus Bowling League for many years, and V.F.W. Post 3863 in Eastlake, a former member of Immaculate Conception Church in Willoughby, where he had been a member of the Mary's Holy Name Society, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, golf and woodworking.
He was the beloved husband of Angela C. (Zenhert) Courneya; cherished grandfather of Jennifer L. Laws; John C. (Linda) Laws; Kristopher C. Flender and Brian A. Flender: stepfather of Kathy (Jerry) Brys; Ginny (Jeff) Brys and Loretta Vaxman; stepgrandfather of Meghan, Jason (Amanda), Kellie, Brandon and Brenna; great-grandfather of Josh, Noah and Skylar; brother of Clarice, Areilia, Frances and Daniel; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabelle C. (Zucco) Courneya; daughters, Judith M. Laws and Catherine L. Flender; sons-in-law, Jack Laws and Kurt Flender; parents, John J. and Evelyn (Stevens) Courneya; and siblings, Joseph, Charlotte, James, Charles and Michael.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave.; Willoughby, where a Rosary service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday evening conducted by the Wickliffe K of C. Burial will be in Willoughby Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name be made to the C.O.P.D. Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave.; Suite 302, Miami, FL 33133.
