1904 - He graduated from Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ
S.W. Corwin’s father, C. B. Corwin, was a New York export agent, exporting products for Gaar-Scott & Co., out of Richmond, Indiana. (farm equipment manufacturers). By 1906, after graduating from Lawrenceville, S.W. Corwin went to work for Gaar-Scott in Richmond.
Within the next few years, he was sent to Fargo, North Dakota as an agent for the company, where his mother joined him. In 1911, Gaar Scott was purchased by Rumley Co, and he was named as Asst. Manager of Rumley Products Co., Fargo branch.
In 1914, D. C. Rand of the Northern Automobile Co. of Jamestown, ND purchased the Henzler garage in Bismarck, ND, and hired S. W. Corwin (formerly with the Rumley Co.) to manage the new branch for the firm, which handled Chalmers and Buick cars. In 1915, Corwin purchased the Bismarck branch and the name was changed to Corwin Motor Company. From there he continued to expand and diversify the business, eventually taking on a partner, Neil O. Churchill, and changing the company name to Corwin-Churchill; a business that continued to grow and expand to other locations, and is still in S.W. Corwin’s family. (There is much more information on the history of the company on-line.)
In January, 1916, at Bismarck, ND, he married Jessie Duff Webb, daughter of William H. Webb, Jr. and Jessie (Mason) Webb. Two sons were born to them in Bismarck, and about 1937, having expanded his business to Fargo, ND, he relocated there with his family.
S.W. Corwin had a long and lucrative career, many business ventures, and was always very involved in civic affairs; his history an interesting one.
