Clyde grew up on a farm in Orangeburg County South Carolina with his brothers Oscar, Freeman and Hobson and his sister Ruby. He severed in Co. H 32nd Infantry in WWI and was stationed in Hawaii. After the war he married Alice Mack and moved to Greenville, SC where he worked in the textile mills. He was a charter member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church. He was a Mason. He loved children and was called "Big Daddy" by his grandchildren and neighborhood kids.
