Ed Oppy was born on his farm in New Richmond, Indiana. He farmed with his brothers Jack and Frank. At one time their father, Christopher Oppy, sold their family homestead and it's associated field land, but the brothers repurchased it two years later. Marrying Ruby Foster later in life afforded Ed and Ruby a comfortable life on the homestead with brother Jack living comfortably in their home his final 3 years of life.
Ed and Ruby had four sons: Leland (1915-1953), Tom (1917-1959), Garland (1920-2006), and David (1922-1990).
Exploratory surgery was performed unsuccessfully on Ed in 1939, and he died shortly thereafter from Uremic poisoning.
