Parents:
ANDREW GORDON MARSHALL (1855-1931) born in Ridge, Old Leighlin, Carlow, Ireland, UK. Immigrated to New York, 9 Jan 1864, aboard the 'City of Baltimore,' along with his parents Penelope and Henry Marshall plus siblings. Andrew grew up in Chicago, got married and had two sons. His first wife died. Little is known about his first family. Andrew moved to California, met and married BESSIE OMEGA BURKE. He was 58 years old. She was 16.
BESSIE OMEGA BURKE (1895-1966) born in Dexter, Stoddard, Missouri, with right leg 1.5 inches shorter than the other. Lived, with her family in Washington, Colorado and then California where she met and married her first and only husband ANDREW GORDON MARSHALL. They both worked at Citrus Soap Factory; lived in San Diego; together they had 3 sons.
Siblings:
Robert Gordon Marshall (1914-1997)
Wallace James Marshall (1923-1994)
By all accounts, Albert was considered to be what we now refer to as developmentally disabled, described as 'hard to handle,' mentally retarded, during his lifetime. He was institutionalized by the age of five and lived the rest of his life this way. When he was sent away, his brothers were told that he had died. By the time they learned the real truth about Albert, he had already passed away.
During Albert's life, family's and doctors knew very little about how to diagnose and treat individuals with special needs. Families were advised to institutionalize. Mental hospitals, particularly Sonoma, were infamous for their shameful practices of forced lobotomy and sterilization.
His death certificate indicates burial in this cemetery after he died in Camerillo.
Albert, we are sorry that your life was spent this way. We wish we had known you and could have shown our love for you during your lifetime. Our love and respect for you, Albert, from the family who never knew you.
