A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service with three regiments:
1. Enlisted in Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County, August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 11 as a private with Co. I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Captured at the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, he was paroled quickly and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. His surname is spelled "Hammar" in the muster roll.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 31, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery C, Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He is in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Daniel." On January 12, 1865, he transferred to Battery L, 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (204th Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery June 30, 1865. He is in ARIAS as "David."
His pension index makes no mention of his service with the 122nd Pennsylvania. He is found in the rosters of the latter two regiments with a middle initial of "S" although his pension index uses "F."
