Dr. Morgan V. Flaherty of Sarasota, FL and Old Saybrook, CT, widower of Frances H. Flaherty died peacefully Thursday, (May 24, 2012) at his home in Sarasota, FL.

Born on Sept. 15, 1917 in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Claude V. Flaherty. He was a graduate of Holy Cross College, Worcester, MA, and received his Medical Degree from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Dr. Flaherty practiced medicine as an obstetrician/gynecologist partnering with Dr. Donald McCrann for 36 years; with affiliation through St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT and the University of Connecticut Medical Center, Farmington, CT. He was also a clinical professor at the University of Connecticut Medical Center for 13 years.

Dr. Flaherty served his country as a Captain in the U.S Armed Forces during World War II as a Medic serving several tours in Europe including the Invasion of Normandy.

During his retired years, Dr. Flaherty spent much of his time on the water enjoying his love of the sea as a yacht owner and as a member of the Bird Key Yacht Club, Sarasota, FL for 26 years. His genuine dedication of his profession, and love of life allowed him to engage and be endeared by many.

He is survived by his son Morgan W. Flaherty and his wife Abbie M. Flaherty of Niantic, CT; his two daughters, Alison D. Trafton of Boca Raton, FL, Patia R. Haverty and her husband Edmund J. Haverty III of West Hartford, CT; his bother Duane J. Flaherty of Overland Park, KS, the mother of his children Patia McDonough Kinnicutt of West Hartford, CT and Bellaire, FL; his eight grandchildren, Ashley E. Flaherty, Christine M. Flaherty, William V. Flaherty, Lange A. Trafton, Ivana M. Jerabek, Jack M. Haverty, Faith M. Haverty, and Colette C. Haverty; his nephew Curt Helme; his niece Gail Sturdevant; his grand-niece Michele Jeka; his stepson Christopher H. Armstrong; and his stepdaughter Mary Morgan.

Friends and relatives may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Ave., Hartford, on Thursday, May 31, 2012, 4-7 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Friday, June 1, 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St., followed by burial in the family plot at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center Development Fund, 140 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105.
