Rachel Eileen Hartmann died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. She was 86.

Mrs. Hartmann was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Birmingham, Ala., to William and Rachel Weaver. She and her family moved to El Paso, Texas, in the early 1930s, and she moved to Pueblo in 1948.

While living in Pueblo, she met and married Donald Hartmann. The couple next moved to Colorado Springs, where they stayed for 10 years.

In 1978, Mrs. Hartmann began helping her husband run an insurance business. She worked at Don Hartmann Agency until recently. The Hartmanns lived in the Durango/Vallecito area for more than 30 years. She often said she loved the vistas at her property in Vallecito. She will be missed greatly by the family she enjoyed so much.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Hartmann, of Durango; a son, Leland Gardiner of Elizabeth; stepsons Larry Hartmann of Kalispell, Mont., and Steve Hartmann of Butte, Mont.; and 14 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers William and Edwin Weaver; sisters Marguerite Hulse, Flora Weaver, Elizabeth Abel and Rosemary Spanagel; and sons Richard Gardiner and John Gardiner.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
