Mary Ellen Arrigan, was born in Haverstraw, New York. She came to Preston, Minnesota for a time and at the age of 9 years moved with her parents, brothers and sisters to a Homestead in Ward Township NW 1/4 Section 8.

She married Yanz and lived near Ward. On June 28, 1911, Mary Ellen, pregnant with her 13th child, became sick during the night. It had been raining and because the dirt roads were in bad shape, Dr. Spafford did not arrive in time to save her or the baby. She died at 2:00a.m. of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Mary and Yanz were married April 11, 1887, Easter Monday in the Catholic Church in Flandreau, SD, by
Father Quinlan.

The H in Harrigan was inadvertently dropped during the immigration process. The name ended up as Arrigan.
