Cayucos Mourns Death of Emily Burroughs

CAYUCOS, April 7 - Cayucos residents were saddened yesterday to learn of the sudden passing Sunday morning of their senior pioneer citizen, Mrs. Emily J. Burroughs, 95.

Mrs. Burroughs, daughter of Capt. James Cass who founded Cayucos, came to this area at the age of nine. She watched with keen interest the many changes which took place in the area during her 86 years of residency, and engaged in a hobby of shell collecting and curio making which was outstanding in that field and served to endear her to thousands who visited her home over the years to view her collection.

"Grandma" Burroughs, as she was affectionately known to her many friends, had just celebrated her 95th birthday two weeks ago, and, although she had been invalided by a fall in 1951, she had not been ill.

She is survived by two children, Ralna C. Burroughs of Cayucos, and Mrs. Viola B. Spaulding of Belvedere; four grandchildren, Liam H. Spaulding Jr., Lorna James Willard Burroughs, Wil Spaulding, and Dr. Carol Whitely; and three great grandchildren.

Private funeral services will be held today at the Palmer-Waters chapel in Cayucos, with interment to follow at the Cayucos cemetery.
