Trooper Bobby Demuth was struck and killed by a vehicle on U.S. 64, in Nash County, while attempting to deploy spike strips during a pursuit at approximately 7:45 am.

The pursuit started when officers from the Raleigh Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver, who was wanted on multiple charges, including two counts of kidnapping, immediately fled at a high speed. Trooper Demuth was struck by the subject's vehicle as he attempted to deploy the spike strips. The man continued to flee but was taken into custody a short distance away.

Trooper Demuth had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for 12 years and was assigned to the Rocky Mount, Troop C District 1 Highway Patrol Office.

Bobby Gene DeMuth Jr., 42, passed away on September 8, 2012. He was born June 9, 1970 in Edgecombe County. Gene proudly served his country as a United States Marine from 1988 to 1992. In 1994, he joined the Wilson County Sheriff's Office where he worked until moving over to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office in 1998. Gene began to work for the NCDMV in 2000 and transferred to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in 2003 where he served until his passing. Gene was a devoted husband and father and loved his family above all things. Gene was preceded in death by his father Bobby Gene DeMuth, Sr.

Gene leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Michelle DeMuth; Son, Trevor DeMuth; his mother, Mildred Posey Karachun; sister, Kathy Marshall and husband Tommy; brother, John Clifton DeMuth; his niece, Amanda Simpson; and nephews, Travis and Tyler Proctor.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 11th, from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at the Englewood Baptist Church, located at 1350 Winstead Ave. Rocky Mount, NC 27803. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, September 12th at the church. The burial will take place at the Red Oak Cemetery following the service.

Flowers will be accepted or Donations may be made to the Dawn Michelle DeMuth Special Fund, in memory of Gene DeMuth @ the State Employees Credit Union.
