ALBERT R. NORRED

Albert Richard Norred never lived more than 50 miles from the place he was born. Although he did not become a resident of Nolan County until 1938, he lived all of his 63 years in Nolan, Mitchell and Scurry Counties.

Norred was born in Dunn, south of Snyder, on July 8, 1900. As a young man, he worked as a mechanic at Yoder Chevrolet in Snyder. It was there he met Faye Black, whose family had moved to Texas from Ohio.

Albert Norred and Faye Black were married on January 2, 1928 in Fort Worth. On October 15, 1929, their only child, William Richard Norred, was born in the Snyder Hospital, then located above Stinson Drug Store on the north side of the square.

In 1963, the Norreds moved to Colorado City where Norred was Service Manager of Mills Chevrolet. In 1938, they moved to Sweetwater and Norred purchased Western Motor Company from Carl Ragland. The original location of Norred Motor Company was 213 W. Broadway. In 1944, the business was moved to 219 W. Broadway, where it remained for over 30 years. The business was sold to Dick Carroll in August, 1975.

Almost immediately upon his arrival in Sweetwater, Norred became an active participant in civic affairs. He was elected to the City Commission, and during his term, he was elected Mayor of Sweetwater. One of the favorite family stories began in the early hours of June 6, 1944, when, as mayor, Norred received the official call that the long-awaited invasion of Europe had begun. He started a chain of events which called ministers to their churches and awakened a city to wait for news from the greatest military campaign in modern times.

He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and served on the building committee in 1952 when the present sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church was built.

Norred became a member of the Rotary Cub in 1943, serving as president in 1948-1949. He served on numerous community boards during the 1940's and 50's, including the Board of City Development.

In 1953, William R. Norred joined his father in the business after graduating from The University of Texas and returning from a tour of military duty in Okinawa, Japan, and Korea during the Korean Conflict. Following his father's example, he became involved in the community. "Bill" was a member of the Jaycees and later the Rotary Club, which he also served as president in 1962-1963. He was a member of the Board of City Development during the change to the now Chamber of Commerce.

The First United Methodist Church is an active interest of Bill's. He has served as chairman of the Council on Ministries and later of the Administrative Board. He is a former church lay leader and Sunday School teacher. Norred also has served on the Sweetwater-Nolan county Child Welfare Board for many years, serving two terms as president.

William Norred married Miss Flozelle Jones, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Davis Jones, (granddaughter of Walter W. Davis) on December 18, 1954. The Sweetwater Reporter headlined the marriage of "Prominent Local Couple" as the "Highlight of the Season".

Flozelle Norred has taught in the Sweetwater schools for 15 years. The Norreds have three daughters: Patricia, Nancy and Kristi.

Patricia currently is Director of Public Relations for the Sweetwater campus of Texas State Technical Institute; Nancy is Mrs. Robert Bails and resides in San Angelo; and Kristi is now a 1984 varsity cheerleader at Sweetwater High School.
