Six Members Former Local Family Drown In California Tragedy
Tragedy struck former Carnegie residents in California the past week as seven persons lost their lives by drowning and an eighth died suddenly from severe illness.
Six persons, all related, were drowned near San Luis Obispo, Calif. and five were rescued when a 28-foot fishing launch capsized in heavy seas about 10:00 a.m. May 31. Survivors remained clinging to the overturned boat until rescued at 12:30 by lifeguards.
The dead are R.B. Fanning, 24, and Buddy Joe Fanning, 11, of Morro Bay, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. A. Fanning, former Carnegie family; Dorothy Miller, 15, and Kenneth Miller, 26, of Fresno, cousins of Mrs. C.A. Fanning; Opal Chilcote, 30, San Luis Obispo, aunt of the Miller children. Bodies of the four boys were still missing according to a special wire to the Herald Wednesday morning.
Survivors were Freida Lou Fanning, 18, sister of the drowned boys; Claude and Fay Miller, Fresno, brother of Kenneth Miller; Blanche Sherman and Sarabelle Delkage, nurses, San Luis Obispo.
R.B. Fanning was married and the father of two small children.
The accident occured a mile off shore after the engine stopped due to fouled carburetor and waves caused the boat to dive under nose first.
Mrs. Ted Fanning, Morro Bay, also a former resident of this place, died suddenly Friday morning, May 30. The Fanning boys, C.A. and ted, are brothers of A.R. Fanning who is seriously ill at his home here and A.J. Fanning of southwest of town.
Mrs. Ella Robinett, mother of Mrs. C.A. Fanning, Mrs. J.J. Myers and children and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Nance left late Saturday for California when first news of the accident was received.
