Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Port Hope, Canada, he joined the Union Army in New York in 1863 and rose to the rank of Sergeant in Company C, 21st New York Cavalry. In actions at Ashbys Gap, Virginia, on July 19, 1864, Union forces were held in check from the Confederates. At great personal risk Sergeant Dodds rushed out under heavy fire, rescued his wounded Captain and carried him from the field to a place of safety. After the war, he settled in Rochester, New York and was a reporter for the Democrat Chronicle. He later returned to Canada, became the US Consular Agent in Port Hope and was the clerk in Hope Township in 1877. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 11, 1896.
