Obituary -
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon for Frances Viola Sweet, who died at her home on Stockade Beaver Creek Saturday at the age of nearly 79 years. Rev. Wm. L. Wade officiated at the rites and burial was made in the Greenwood cemetery by the side of her husband.
Many beautiful floral pieces bore their silent messages of sympathy and condolences from relatives and friends. The musical selections were presented by a quartette composed of O. C. Kerney, Gordon Haecox, Pansy Coates and Bernice Bettis, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."
Casket beareres were Herbert Musgrave, Harold Mahnke, Frank Fawcett, Glenn Crawford, Clifford Schulze and Fred Fawcett.
Frances Viola Johnstone, daughter of Rev. Levi and Frances Johnstone, was born July 11, 1860 at Quaker City, Ohio, and departed this life at the home of her daughter Della, on Beaver Creek, at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 29 days. When a small child she was baptized in her father's church. In April 1861, the family moved to Chelsea, Iowa, where she spent her childhood. The family then moved to a farm near Norton KS, where she was married to Wesley P. Hannum in 1876. Two children were born to this union, Bessie and Junior. In 1891 she was separated from Mr. Hannum and came to Newcastle.
On March 8, 1892, she was united in marriage to Thomas P. Sweet and moved to Stockade Beaver Creek where she spent the most of her remaining years. To this union were born three children, Stella, Fred, and Della.
Mrs. Sweet was a devoted wife and mother, a kind and helpful neighbor, always being ready to lend a helping hand to those she could aid in any way. She leaves to mourn her loss four children, Bessie (Bessie Mahala Hannum) Baker of Los Angeles, CA; Stella (Sweet) Mann, Della (Sweet) Bowles and Fred (Sweet) of Newcastle; six grand children, Earl LaFors, Clarice Steele, Floyd Sweet, Lloyd Bowles, Merriet and Darlene Mann. Three great granchildren, Paul, Betty and Robert Steele, besides several other relatives and many friends.
Mr. Sweet preceded her in death in 1924.
