Morris John Lawrence, 88, Minot died on Friday March 9, 2007 in a Minot healthcare center.

Morris was born on May 8, 1918 in Crosby, North Dakota to Wendell and Bessie (Morrison) Lawrence. He was raised in Crosby and graduated from Crosby High School. He attended a Minot business college where he received specialized training in accounting, later continuing his advanced education in business and banking.

He began employment at Union National Bank in 1939 as an assistant cashier and continued his association with the bank, except for his military service with the Army in the South Pacific during World War II, until his retirement in 1983.

Morris married Donna Anderson of Larson, ND on October 9, 1949 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Harrison Township of Ward County west of Minot where they raised their two daughters and he continued his association with Union National Bank which became First Bank.

In January of 1970 Morris was promoted to assistant vice president-agricultural representative and in July of 1974 to vice president – cashier. He was named comptroller in January of 1982 prior to his retirement in June of 1983.

Morris volunteered countless hours, over a 30 year period, as the treasurer of the North Dakota State Fair and Norsk Hostfest for twenty-eight years. He was an Elder, Trustee and Sunday school teacher as well as financial secretary for approximately 25 years at First Presbyterian Church, Past President of the Minot Council of Churches, Minot USO Council, Harrison Township School Board, Ward County School Boards Association and was Chairman of the Ward County Red Cross Rural Fund Campaign. He was an honorary board member of the ND State Fair, in part due to the many hours he spent securing the State Fair for Minot, Harrison Township Assessor, Chairman of the Minot Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee and was active in Model High School activities and the northwest ND Girl Scout Council. As a result of his community, church and volunteer efforts and dedication to family and First Bank he received the Minot Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award.

He will always be remembered for the standards by which he lived, his integrity and his strong work ethic. Work was his main hobby, but when he had some free time he enjoyed reading, bowling, classical music, pool, tennis, badminton, yard work and watching and feeding the wild birds in his back yard. He was proud to have had the privilege to ski with Casper Oimoen and Al Gimse.
