Doris Sasser, a local philanthropist, died peacefully at home on Feb. 6 after a lengthy illness. Rainbow Hospice assisted Mrs. Sasser and her family in managing the last stages of her life with breast cancer. Mrs. Sasser, nee Doris Louise Hollerbach, was born on Dec. 25, 1920 in Chicago. Her parents were the late Emily and Fred Hollerbach. Doris attended high school in Chicago and continued her studies at North Park College. In 1946, Doris married Robert M. Sasser, the son of Fred and Sigrid C. Sasser. They raised three children together in Park Ridge, IL, Susan, Fred and John. The late Robert Sasser was the president of Chicago Freight Car Leasing, and Mrs. Sasser assisted him at the company. Together they traveled extensively, visiting Africa, China and Russia, and they explored the United States in their beloved camper. Doris and Robert were adventurous, eager to learn new things, and enjoyed making new friends. Doris and Robert Sasser supported local civic, charitable and medical organizations. These include Avenues to Independence, Rainbow Hospice, Chicago Public Radio, Lutheran General Hospital and many others. Mrs. Sasser and her family have been nominated to receive the 2007 Distinguished Philanthropist Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Chicago Chapter. Mrs. Sasser wanted to make a difference in the world, and was particularly interested in funding projects that would help organizations move up to a higher level of effectiveness and service. Doris Sasser was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many good friends. A Service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at her church, the Park Ridge Community Church, 100 South Courtland Avenue in Park Ridge, followed by an informal reception. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to Rainbow Hospice or Avenues to Independence, both of Park Ridge, IL, or to the charity of their choice.
