Charles Lee Sloan, 77, of Fairmont, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2012) at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg following a long illness.

He was born in Mannington on Nov. 4, 1934, son of the late Ray Aaron and Virgie Mae (Stull) Sloan. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Myrtle Belle (Keener) Sloan, in June 2009.

Upon his graduation from Mannington High School, Charles proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force, serving as a staff sergeant with the first fighter group stationed at Selfridge Field in Mount Clemens, Mich. He was awarded the Good Conduct, National Defense and Air Force Commendation medals. He was a member of the American Legion. After his discharge from the Air Force, Charles and Myrtle returned to Fairmont to live and raise their family. Charles became a licensed electrician and was employed at Westinghouse/Philips Lighting, from where he retired with more than 30 years of service.

He was a member of Life United Methodist Church, Faith Campus. He was known and admired for his strong faith and positive attitude, which he maintained until his death. Throughout his many health problems he neither gave up nor gave in, preferring to always find the silver lining to every obstacle. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, gardening and being outdoors. He was an avid reader and was a published author of two books chronicling his adventures in the Air Force, "The War Virgins" and "Wings Over the Great Northern Plains." He was working on writing his third novel. Charles was a WVU Mountaineer and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, never missing a game. He liked watching Western movies and aviation documentaries on television.

Charles is survived by two daughters, Pamela M. Sloan of Fairmont and Crystal L. Sloan of Fairmont; his good friend, Jim Moore of Fairmont, who was like a son to him; one brother, Gary Sloan and his wife Sheila of Mannington; two sisters, Judith Thompson and her husband John of Mannington, and Louise Hyer of Joetown; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved cats, Boo, Smokey, Tabbers and Mr. Purrty.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Harry Edward Sloan.

Interment was at Grandview Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in Fairmont where the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard provided full military honors.
