Frans Ybes Poortinga was born 24 October 1848 near the town of Brantgum, Friesland, The Netherlands, the eldest son and 2nd child of Iebe Franzes Poortinga and Boeue Geerts Wieringa. On 25 May 1871, Frans was married to : Ybeltje P. Gosses Jaarsma in the town of Westdongeradeel, Friesland, the Netherlands. To this union, there were born THIRTEEN (13) children, s follows : Effie (Aafke)Poortinga (1872-1955), Bertha (Boene) Poortinga (1873-1934), Edward (Ybe) F. Poortinga (1875-1959), Nellie Poortinga (1877-1878), George (Goffe) Poortinga (1878-1878), George (Goffe) F. Poortinga (1880-1963), Garrett (Geert) F. Poortinga (1881-1983), Dow (Douwe) F. Poortinga (1882-1976), Sieb F. Poortinga (1884-1975), Sam (Soffe) F. Poortinga (1885-1981), Dora Poortinga (1887-1901), Maggie (Mauke) Poortinga (1888-1951), Ella Poortinga (1891-1941). All the children except Maggie and Ella, were born in The Netherlands. In the year 1888,Frans Ybes Poortinga brought his large family to the United States, settling near the town of Pella, Marion County, Iowa. He later purchased land near the town of Otley, a few miles North of Pella, remaining there the remainder of his days. Frans Ybes Poortinga died on 28 August 1913 at Pella, Iowa, and following services, was buried at Oakwood Cemetry in that town. Approximately 1-1/2 years later,on 09 February 1915,his wife of nearly 45 years, joined him there. They lie next to a small monument that shows the burial site of their young daughter, Dora, who hd died in 1901. "Find A Grave,s" inventory of burials at Oakwood does NOT show Frans - or any other Poortingas buried in that cemetery. Many of my relatives "know better" because I have many photos I personally took of gravesites of these people.
