STEPHENS Col. USA (Retired) Elwood Larry Stephens went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 8, 2012. Larry was born on August 8, 1937 in Glen St. Mary, FL but grew up in Semmes, AL. He graduated from the University Military School in Mobile, AL in 1955, and received his BS degree from Auburn University in 1959, where he was Phi Delta Theta. Larry joined the family horticulture business, Semmes Nurseries Inc. and was President of the Alabama Nurserymen Association 1967-68. In 1961, he joined the Army Reserve and was a SFC when he received a direct commission as a 1 Lt. in the US Army Medical Service Corps (MSC), entering active duty in 1970. He attended the Medical basic and advance courses, Command General Staff College, and received an MS degree from Florida Institute of Technology. Larry served 28 years stationed in Okinawa Japan, Heidelberg, Germany, and Saudi Arabia (Desert Storm). In the USA, his assignments included Ft.Campbell, KY, Ft. Lee VA, Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Sam Houston, TX on several occasions. He loved soldiers and field units. His military awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit w/ 2 OLC, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal w/ 4 OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/ 2 OLC, Southwest Asia Campaign Medal and Liberation of Kuwait Medals and numerous other Medals, Badges and ribbons. Colonel Stephens was also the recipient of the Order Of Military Medical Merit and was a Distinguished Member of the United States Army Medical Department Regiment. He retired from the Army in 1998 in San Antonio, TX. His hobbies included reading, gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Elwood and Kathryn Stephens, his sister Ann Stephens Falletta and brother Charles (Pete) Duncan Stephens. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Lucy Leatherbury Stephens; daughter Ashley Brodine, son-in-law Dr. Alan Brodine, and grandchildren Brian, Andrea, Rachel, and Stephen of Rochester, NY; daughter Elizabeth (Lisa) Daniel, former son-in-law Jay Daniel, and grandchildren Angela and Taylor of San Antonio, TX; uncle Merrill Stephens of Semmes, AL; cousin Eugene (Gene) Williams of Gainesville, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Porter Loring Mortuary North. Service Monday, September 17, 2012 10:00 a.m. at Porter Loring North Chapel. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:30 A.M.
