James, known to the family as "Little Deacon" was a troubled child. He was in and out of institutions throughout his turbulent life.
According to the Casper Star-Tribune, he was a "model inmate" at The Riverton Honor Farm before he simply walked away. James accosted Mrs. ****** with a knife, in a parking lot, however, she got away unharmed. He then got someone to drive him to The Lucky Dollar bar in Shoshoni where he was subsequently arrested for the jailbreak. He was able to commandeer the law enforcement vehicle and, drove back to the bar where he produced a 357 magnum, robbing the bar of $300.00. He asked for a ride and a Mr. ***** offered to drive him. He accepted, taking Ms.******, the bartender, age 25, hostage as well. He released Mr. ***** and, continued his high-speed chase from authorities. Stopping for gas in Casper, Deputy ***** fired a single shot through the windshield hitting James in the neck disabling him. Ms. ****** was unharmed when James weakly asked for an ambulance. On Wednesday, Dec 15, 1970, at 1:00 a.m., James lay on the operating table and breathed one last breath giving up his spirit into the arms of his heavenly Father. He finally found the peace he had so longed for when they laid him to rest in the Hanford Cemetery. James rests next to his Dad, Harvey. James now has perfect peace in the arms of his Lord Jesus Christ, who most assuredly gave him the love and comfort he had so desperately yearned for throughout his journey upon this often cold, cruel earth.
For reasons not even known to him, he was unable to attain, or accept the one thing he so desperately wanted, being loved for who he was. He had an uncanny ability to solve mathematics problems in his head. He didn't like school.
What was it that drove him to such desperate extremes? Once inside prison walls, what happened to this delicate child that plunged him deeper into chaos from which he wasn't able to return? Could it all have been prevented? Only God knows. Do not think badly of him for his inabilities, for he did the best he could do. Do not think he had it easy, for you did not feel his daily pain. Do not ridicule his parents, for they gave him all they knew. Do not think it could not happen to your family, for we know not whom confusion may subdue.
Life is precious at best and often much too short, so we try with might to live out the daily circumstances of this messy world the best way we know how, though often we stumble.
Remember to think kindly when you think upon this young man for we know not what he suffered, after all, he still IS our family. See you "Little Deacon"...Rest well gentle soul. Amen.
Update: 2020, DNA confirmed that "Little Deacon" fathered a son that no one was unaware of. In His wisdom, I believe that God took him home to spare him from the painful path that he was on. That's how much He loves us. From this wisdom, our family welcomes the remarkable relatives that are forged out of this tragedy. Bonding is an ongoing beautiful blessing. Amen.
