ROCK HILL - Mr. Thomas Hugh Simrill Jr. passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012, at Ebenezer ARP Church Cemetery with Dr. Shelton P. Sanford III officiating.
A native of York County, S.C., Mr. Simrill was a son of the late Thomas Hugh Simrill Sr. and the late Sarah Ella Wise Simrill. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law and was an active member of the South Carolina Bar during his professional career. He was also a WWII veteran and served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, Delta Sigma Fraternity, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Simrill was a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, serving on the Judiciary Committee; former President of the York County Bar Association; former member of South Carolina Trial Lawyer's Association and The Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He was a former member of the American Judicature Society, and a member of the American Arbitration Association. He was admitted to practice in all state and federal trial and appellate courts and to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Simrill organized and set up the Rock Hill branch office of Southern Bank & Trust Company, and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors until its merger with First Union National Bank of South Carolina. He also served as a member of the General Board of Directors of First Union National Bank of South Carolina and Chairman of the Local Board.
He chartered the York County Cancer Association and was the first president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler and member of Board of Trustees of the Rock Hill B.P.O.E. No. 1318.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Simrill; three sons, Tom (Cindy) Simrill III of Acworth, Ga., Browne (Karen) Simrill of Fernandina Beach, Fla. and Gary (Mary Ruth) Simrill of Rock Hill; his brother, Jack (Tea) Simrill of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; and five grandchildren, Mallory, Tommy, Sarah Kate, Jack and Dozier Simrill.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
Members of the South Carolina House of Representatives will serve as honorary pallbearers.
