August was s/o August Bretthauer, Sr. and Fredericka Grube. He married Caroline Wilhelmina "Lena" Merkel, Febuary 25 1883 at Immanual Lutheran Church in Yorkville, Kendall Co., ILLinois. Helped build the church they were married in. Spring 1907 moved to Lohrville area of Calhoun Co., Iowa. 1910 moved family to rual Pomeroy, Calhoun Co., Iowa. 1916 moved to a house on the north edge of Pomeroy next to Union Cemetery where he became Sexton or caretaker. He also became janitor at the school until 1935 when a new school was erected. Celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary, May 21, 1934. He was educated in Chicago. Occupation: Carpenter/Mason/Farmer. After his wife's death, Caroline, he lived with his son Herman and Beulah until his death.
