The funeral for Marvin Brotten, 94, of Devils Lake, formerly of Esmond, was held Sat. at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Esmond. Interment was in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond. He died April 22, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.
Rev. Allyne M. Holz officiated. Margaret Toso was organist & Jimmy Gilbertson was soloist. Pallbearers were Odmar Amundson, Art & Leroy Rice, Lloyd Lorenz, Ward Bengson & Ivan Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Sylvester Hoffner, Bud Knudson, Ingvald & Edward Swingen, Victor Lybeck, Wayne Jensen, Leo Halvorson, Orville Stadum & Ray Weisbeck. The Nelson Funeral Home of Esmond was in charge of arrangements.
Marvin Brotten was born Oct. 22, 1901 north of Esmond to Thomas & Nina Nelson Brotten. He was reared & educated in the Esmond area & worked in the shipyards at Beaverton, Ore. during the early 1940's. He returned to farm in Esmond Township north of Esmond. He retired in 1978 & moved to Devils Lake. The past few years he had lived at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Esmond & was a former member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Esmond. He also served on the Esmond Township Board.
Survivors include 2 sisters, Olive Jellum & Alice Carlson, both of Beaverton, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers, Grant, Lloyd, Roy, Alton & Morris; & a sister, Florence Bowman.
