He was born July 4, 1921, in Tylertown, Miss. He received a bachelor of science degree from Mississippi State College in 1950. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps on Jan. 6, 1942, flew 40 bombing missions over North Africa, Sicily and Italy, was awarded the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters and numerous campaign ribbons and was honorably discharged on Sept. 15, 1945.
Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continuing on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until religious service in the chapel at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Martin Corie and the Rev. Ken Carroll. Entombment will be in Greenoaks Memorial Park & Mausoleum with military honors.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Jane and James L. "Jimmy" Culpepper Sr., Baton Rouge; son, James Harold Lewis, Baton Rouge; grandson, James L. "Lane" Culpepper Jr., Baton Rouge; granddaughters, Robbi L. Lewis and Janey L. Lewis, both of Baton Rouge; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Loyce and Earl Esteves of Chalmette, Joyce Lambert of Monticello, Miss., Clara and Tony Silveira of Pearl River and Peggy and Denzel Campbell of Weaver, Ala.; sister-in-law, Georgia T. "Pud" Barousse of Baton Rouge; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Barousse Lewis; parents, Clarence Edgar and Louetta Bullock Lewis; sister, Ouida May Lewis; brother, Marlon Price Lewis; and two brothers-in-law, Valrie E. Barousse and Maxie P. Lambert.
He was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, associate member of Grace & Truth Fellowship Church, life member of VFW Post 3784, member of American Legion Nicholson Post 38, AARP, Retired Louisiana State Employees Association and Mended Hearts Inc. Pallbearers will be James L. Culpepper, Lane Culpepper, Valrie E. Barousse Jr., Henry J. Barousse, Kent Lambert and Joseph Caracci. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 3968 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70806, Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70815, or Grace & Truth Fellowship Church, 1357 Sharp Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70815.
