Alma Dorthea Zander, 95, Minot and formerly of Hamberg, New Rockford and Devils Lake, died on Saturday, March 17, 2007 in a Minot healthcare center.

Alma was born on August 30, 1911 in Hamberg, ND, to William and Ida (Kehn) Kanwischer. She was raised on a farm near Hamberg and attended rural school. She was baptized and confirmed at the Concordia Lutheran Church near Hamberg. Alma married Herbert Fredrick Zander on May 26, 1931 near Hamberg. They made their home on a farm in Wells County south of Bremen ND. They moved to Hamberg in 1938, New Rockford in 1942, and Devils Lake in 1968 where they served as house parents at Lake Region Junior College, and to Minot in 1974 where they lived at Talbotts Trailer Court. Herbert died on May 24, 1982 and Alma moved to New Rockford later that year before returning to Minot in 1997 where she resided at Edgewood Vista prior to entering Manorcare Health Services in August of 2002.

Alma was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church – Minot and a former member of First Lutheran Church – New Rockford and St. Olaf Lutheran Church – Devils Lake. Her hobbies and special interests included cooking and card playing.

Her loving family includes: Children: Ken (Lois) Zander of Minot, Phyllis Hitz of rural New Rockford, Merle (Eileen) Zander of Minot, and Terry (Julie) Zander of Devils Lake; Thirteen Grandchildren: Tim (Diane) Zander, Sara (Jeff) Luedke, Jeffrey Hitz, Mark (Margie) Hitz, Bruce (Nancy) Hitz, Karen (Rod) Thompson, Kristi (Paul) Jurek, Joe (Kris) Amundson, Troy (Linn) Zander, Jill (Luke) Schwan, Amy (Chuck) McGarvey, Kelly Zander and Chad Zander; Twenty-five Great Grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son: Howard, daughter: Lois Amundson, grandson, Shawn Hitz, and brothers: Walter, Clarence, Norman and Orville Kanwischer.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church – Minot.
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.
Visitation: Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Memorials: preferred to the donor's choice.
