OBITUARY:

BYERS, Della F. In this city, July 16, 1968, beloved mother of Virgil, Celeste Gilhousen, Helen Schafer and Opal Bristow; also survived by 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; a resident of
Sacramento 38 years, aged 94. Services, Sacramento Memorial Garden Chapel, Saturday 10 a.m. Interment, Sacramento Memorial Lawn.

OBITUARY:

On July 16, 1968, the last member of the Grand Junction "Gospel Trumpet family" died. Della F. Byers widow of the late songwriter, Andrew L. Byers, was ninety-six years old.

On June 19, 1981, Della Wickersham arrived at the Gospel Trumpet offices in Grand Junction, Mich., to accept work, without salary, with the small but dedicated group responsible for the publication of Church of God literature. That same day, Andrew Byers arrived and their futures were to become one as husband and wife.

Mrs. Byers was born near the town of Portland, Ind., in 1874. At the age of twelve she was converted during a revival meeting in her home. The services were conducted by D. S. Warner.

It was at this time that her father, H. C. Wickersham, accepted the teaching on the unity of God's people and the concept of the church which Warner was holding. Later that year young Della was baptized.

Accepting the job in the Grand Junction office she used to sit on a high stool and set the type by hand for the "Gospel Trumpet". After proofreading, the paper was run off on a small hand press, folded by hand and mailed.

During this period the Grand Junction, Mich. campgrounds were purchased and a small building erected for a place to hold church services. Along with the "Trumpet family" she would attend Sunday services on the campgrounds. It was there that D. S. Warner preached his last sermon.

Mrs. Byers is survived by six children: Virgil A. Byers, Portland, Ore., Mrs. Robert Gilhousen, Lady Lake, Fla., Homer L. Byers, Palo Alto Calif., Mrs. Roy Schaeffer, Eugene, Ore., Ronald L. Byers, Portland, and Mrs. John C. Bristow, Sacramento, Calif.
