Alex was born to Ohio natives Benjamin and Hannah (Vanwinkle) and the family moved to Rock county, WI just after Alex arrived. His father died in 1844 and his mother died in four years later. Alex was an orphan at age 11 and lived with siblings. At 17, he moved out on his own to Hastings, MN and took a job at a livery for a year and then rented a farm in the county until his enlisted.

Just prior to his enlistment, he married Miss Sarah A. Howell of Jackson County, OH (Born February 18, 1840) on February 4, 1857.

Alex entered military service during the Civil War and Indian Wars on August 13, 1862 and became a member of Co F, 8th MN Infantry. He saw action during the Indian massacre at New Ulm, Fort Snelling, and Fort Ridgely and assisted General Sully during his expedition to the Missouri River and in the Civil War at Murfreesboro, TN where was discharged at Nashville in May, 1865.

When he returned to Dakota county, MN, he farmed for another two years and then moved to Rice county and moved again to Renville county in 1872. He arrived in Hutchinson in 1875 and farmed for over three years in section 35 of Lynn township.

Alex and his wife, Sarah had four children:
Willis D born November 8, 1857 who later married Carrie Olsen
Jennie E born March 14, 1861 who later married Charles A Simpson
Glibert E born May 2, 1868
Minnie F born Otobe 5, 1872.
