US Army Korean War Veteran PFC Ercel D Smathers was flown back from the Korean War zone to Fort Lewis, WA May 6, 1951, but Army Doctors could not save him. The young soldier was married and leaves a baby son. His parents, Mr & Mrs John G Smathers of Leavenworth, KS and brother and sister Oliver and Marcella Smathers, Leavenworth, KS attended funeral services for PFC Smathers in WA in May 1951. The Smathers family moved to Leavenworth, KS in March 1948. Five months later Ercel joined the U S Army. On May 20, 1949 he married Miss Dorothy Ann New. They made their home at West Seattle, WA before he went overseas.
