Robert Dudley ‘Bob' Bishop

RUDD, IOWA — Robert Dudley "Bob" Bishop, 74, formerly of Rudd, died Wednesday (Sept. 30, 1998) at Nora Springs Care Center, following a lengthy illness.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nora Springs First Christian Church, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd, with military honors conducted by the Nora Springs American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., Nora Springs, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Robert Dudley Bishop was born December 22, 1923, in rural Rudd, son of Sereno E. "Reno" and Gladys E. (Allen) Bishop. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1942.

Bob served in the Army in Korea, where he was a military policeman, a cook and an electrician. He was a 4-H member and received awards for the showing of hogs at the 4-H Achievement Show in Charles City. While in high school, he was the fastest reader in the "Speed Reading" course. Later he attended a school for electricity and radio. Following a correspondence course in Taxidermy, he enjoyed it as a hobby. He had poems and short stories published in the Cappers Weekly and also in their books about pioneers.

While attending the Methodist Church in Rudd, he taught Sunday School, completed a "Layman's Study and Speaking Class," and later taught this class. With all these activities, he also farmed west of Rudd for over 40 years.

Bob married Grace Hinders on Aug. 25, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They adopted a son, William Lewis Bishop. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends.

Survivors include one son, William "Bill" Bishop and his wife, Kellie, of Orrum, N.C.; five grandchildren, Amber Bishop, of Toledo; Allan and Jeremy Collins, and Shawn and Matthew Bishop, all of Osage; three stepgrandchildren, Shayne, Melissa and Katie Hanson, all of Orrum, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Betty Waters, of Nora Springs Care Center, and Ruth Waters and her husband, Charley, of Nora Springs; one brother, Carroll Bishop and his wife, Joyce, of Osage; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, in 1991; his mother, in 1975; his father in 1979; a brother, David, in 1983; a brother-in-law, Richard Eli Waters, in 1997; and both his maternal and paternal grandparents.
