Nels was born in Horby (source did not identify county) to farmers Pehr and Christine Algren. He was educated in Sweden and at 15 learned the blacksmithing trade and continued to practice the skill in Sweden until 1868.

He immigrated directly to St. Paul, MN and then to LeSueur for five years where he was a blacksmith. During this time, he met and wed Miss Mary Olson, daughter of Ole and Mary who immigrated from Skjold, Denmark. The younger Mary was born March 7, 1847 in Denmark. After their wedding (year not mentioned) the couple moved to Lynn, McLeod county, Mn and homesteaded 80 acres on section 32 in Lynn township expanding later to 160 acres.

The site now boasts a frame house, good barn, granary, and outbuilding. He arrived with $10 in America and shows a farm and family of six children:
