His education was interrupted by military service. He served in the Spanish American War, enlisted April 1898, served in the Phillipines from July 1898 to January 1899 in Co A, 13th Minn Volunteers. He was discharged January 1899 due to typhoid malaria.
On Jan. 1 1900, He established a law office in Hutchinson, MN and was elected McLeod county attorney serving from 1908-1912.
By 1910, with Carlos Avery, he organized the national Gopher Campfire Club, a sportsman's organization and wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary began as early as 1901.
Sam Jr. married Margaret Ames on June 7, 1913 and had 5 children; two died in infancy/childhood, Patrick Ames just before 2 yrs and Jane Abby at age 11 (both children are buried beside Sam and Margaret); Sam Jr, Peggy and Mary attended his funeral.
From 1914-1923 served as postmaster of Hutchinson, initially appointed to the post by President Woodrow Wilson. Another federal appointment was his 1929-1935 Federal Migratory Bird Advisory Board by President Herbert Hoover, the highest honor in American conservation. In 1934, Sam ran as MN's Democratic candidate for governor.
