Henry was born Heinrich Gottlob Kraus in Nürtingen in the district of Esslingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany.

Henry was a Corporal in Company H of the 4th MINN Infantry. He mustered in at age 22 on February 22, 1862 and was honorably discharged on July 19, 1865 after reenlistment in 1864 and promotion to the ranks of Corporal and Seargent. Henry trained at Ft Snelling with Co. H and left for battle in the South by steamboat in April, 1862. He saw the surrender of Vicksburg as well as combat in the battles of Chattanooga, Corinth, Champion Hills, Allatoona, and other skirmishes under General Sanborn.

After the war, he married Carolina Golisch in March, 1867 in Carver, Minnesota. Through 1900, the couple lived in Chanhassen or Chaska, of Carver County, MN. In the 1905 US census, Henry is found living in Hutchinson, McLeod county, MN.

The couple's children included:
Hulda dau (3 yrs on the MN 1870 census, not on 1875)
Herman son (10 years on the 1880 census)
Clara dau (6 years on the 1880 census)
Amelia dau (2 years on the 1880 census)
