The Wilsons appeared in the 1820 census in Limestone Co., AL, but moved to Cahaba, Dallas Co., AL, before Rosie was born in 1822. In Cahaba, they met the Gwins.
Roe married on 12 May 1842 in Cahaba to William Gwin, son of John Gwin and Jane "Jenny" Walker Gwin. Roe's older sister, Mary Burdine Wilson, had married John's older brother, Isom Gwin. This made all of the descendants of these four double cousins to each other. For example, Will and Roe are my own gg-grandparents, and Isom and Mary are Barbara Ward's gg-grandparents, so Barb and I are double fourth cousins to each other. Barb is the owner of the old photo album that contains the photo of Roe shown here and dozens of other photos. (Copy and paste into your browser the URL below to go to our page for that album.)
Will and Roe had the following ten children, only half of whom survived to adulthood:
25.01--Mary Ann Elizabeth Gwin m. Robert Guy Lochridge
25.02--Martha Jane Gwin (1845-1847); -- died as toddler
25.03--William Sutton Gwin m. Ida Eliza Basset
25.04--John Wesley Gwin d. in his 20's; never married
25.05--Rufus King Gwin m. Ann Turner
25.06--Lucy Marcella Gwin d. as teen; never married
25.07--Isham Griffin Gwin, Sr. m. Mary Etta (Molly) Self
25.08--unk. Gwin d. as infant;
25.09--unk. Gwin d. as infant;
25.10--Thomas Wilson Gwin d. as teen; never married
I descend through their third born, William Sutton "Sutt" Gwin.
As Cahaba was shutting down, Will and Roe moved their young family to Randolph in Bibb County, where in 1859 Will opened a lumber yard on the railroad with his business partner, a Mr. Oakley. By the 1870 census, Will and Roe had moved again, this time to Wilsonville in Shelby Co., AL, where they started their own lumber company and carpentry business. Steam power had arrived in Wilsonville, and the saws, lathes, and other power tools were so converted.
In 1875, Roe's father, Nathaniel, died, and she returned to Dallas County for his funeral and probate. Will's father, John, died in Wilsonville two years later, and he was buried in the Wilsonville City Cemetery.
Sometime after Will himself died in 1889 and was also buried next to his father, Roe moved to Tampa, Florida, to be near and with the family of her daughter. Roe died there at age 84. Her body was shipped by train back to Wilsonville where she was buried with Will.
