Rudolph Bolstad was a member of the 194th Tank Battalion stationed in the Philippines in December 1941. After the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield, just ten hours after Pearl Harbor, he fought to slow the Japanese conquest of the Philippine Islands.
On April 9, 1942, the order was given for all Filipino and American forces to surrender to the Japanese. Bolstad went into the jungle and joined the guerrilla forces. He continued to fight the Japanese until 1944 when he was evacated to Australia.
He was returned to the United States and promoted to sergeant and later commissioned to first lieutenant. He died, possibly from the wounds received while a guerrilla, outside of Chicago, at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital.
