Aleszandra “Alie” Berrelez, 5 year old victim, vanished from the courtyard outside her Golden Nugget Apartments in Englewood, Colorado where she and her two brothers had been playing. Her mother, Marivel Berrelez, had stepped inside her apartment for a few minutes and returned to discover Alie was missing. She was kidnapped and murdered. Three days after she vanished, a police bloodhound named Yogi led officers on a 14-mile odyssey — from the apartment, down Broadway, along C-470 and into Deer Creek Canyon. Her killer had stuffed her into a green canvas bag and tossed her down a hillside in Deer Creek Canyon. Some 18 years after her death, Nicholas Randolph Stofer, a neighbor in the same apartments Alie had lived at the time and who himself had died of a drug overdose in 2001, is believed to be her killer through DNA evidence.
