The Fort Wayne Daily News, July 31, 1896 - Frank Etchey, a carpenter, stepped on a rusty nail Wednesday afternoon and has a badly swollen foot in consequence.

From the Fort Wayne News, account of Francis Etchey's death (he is mistakenly referred to as Frederick Etchey) Saturday, October 2, 1897, This morning Frederick Etchey died at his northside home of lockjaw, after a few hours of suffering. The deceased was 65 years old and has lived in Fort Wayne for many years. He was a Member of St. Mary's Catholic church and was a regular attendant with his wife and four children. The family has lived at 37 Wefel street for several years. Mr. Etchey was a carpenter and recently has been a commission merchant wheat at the local market. A week ago yesterday, While near his home, the deceased stepped on a rusty nail. The point penetrated his left great toe but did not inflict a painful wound. He quickly removed his shoe and poulticed the slight wound with a fresh moat. The soreness was soon removed and in two days he went about as usual and on Thursday night walked downtown without experiencing any discomfiture. When he retired that night his neck became sore and stiff. It was difficult for him to swallow. He went to sleep, however, thinking that it was merely the result of a slight cold. Yesterday morning when he arose his neck was so stiff that he could not move it. Later the muscles of his throat became paralyzed. He was almost motionless in bed. His family did not think that his condition was alarming, and Dr. Easlen was not called till 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. After a close Examination, he at once pronounced lockjaw. He informed the family and remained at the patient's side during part of the day and night. Last evening the jaws became fixed. The teeth were about half an inch apart and the jaw could not be opened or closed. the muscles and the bones seemed locked and immovable. During the early morning hours, the paroxysms peculiar to lockjaw made the dying hours of the patient one of torture. While in convulsions he died at 6 o'clock this morning. [Wow!]
