Everyone called him "James". Thomas James was living with his brother, Charles and his wife, Laura and family in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York and working as a machinist when the June 1880 Census for New York was taken (1st Ward, Syracuse, Onondaga, N.Y.) He was listed as being single on the census.

In 1881 Thomas James Barber married Nina May Doyle, daughter of Thomas Doyle (1825-1910) and Caroline V. "Carrie" Holmes (1843-1897).

On the June 1900 Federal Census from Syracuse (Ward 6), Onondaga, New York: Thomas age 44, born October 1855 in N.Y., occupation Machinist; wife, Nina age 38, born September 1862 in N.Y., married 18 years (1881), having had no children.

On the April 1910 Federal Census from Syracuse (Ward 6) the family was listed as: Thomas J. age 54, occupation Machinist owned Shop; wife, Nina age 45, having had no children.

According to cemetery records, Nina Doyle Barber died in August 1912 in Syracuse. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York.

Thomas married (2nd) widow, Adelaide "Addie" Irene (Shore) Walton, daughter of George W. Shore (1837-1912) and Ann MacArthur (1828-1910) and widow of Lenard Walton, on 16 July 1913 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York; they had no children.

On the January 1920 Federal Census from Syracuse, Onondaga, New York; Thomas J. age 64, Machinist at Machine Shop; wife, Adaline E. age 43 (1877). No children were listed.

On the April 1930 Federal Census from Syracuse, Onondaga, New York: Thomas J. age 74, occupation Machinist at Machine Shop; wife, Adelaide at age 54.
