Father of nine children (2 of whom died before 1900): Anna, Francis, Joseph, May, Florence, Edson, and Richard Poast.

It is unknown exactly when Francis immigrated from Ireland to Canada, but his wife's memorial states they were married in 1869 in Ontario, Canada. His name is listed on the Ontario, Canada Census Index for 1871, where he lived in Bexley located in the Victoria North District. He was listed as the head of the household, his religion as a Wesleyan Methodist and his occupation as a farmer. Shortly afterwards he and his family relocated to the United States.

Francis was listed on the 1880 census living in Oakville, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory (now Grand Forks County, North Dakota), where he worked as a farmer. He lived with his wife Matilda (the census states her father was born in Ireland and her mother in Canada), and their four children: Annie E. (age 9), Francis W (age 5), Joseph N. (age 3), and Millay [May] (daughter, 9 months?), all born in Canada.

Five years later, he and his family had relocated to Bourbon, Fort Scott, Kansas, where they were listed on the 1885 census. His last name was spelled as Post and he was now working in the roofing business. Family members listed on the census were his wife, Matilda and their children Annie (age 14), Wesley (age 10), J. H. (age 7), May (age 5) and a daughter (age 2), transcribed as Maurd, although the handwriting is very hard to read. Her name was probably Maud. She was born in Dakota Territory and died before 1900.

By 1900 the family had moved again, to Kane, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, where Francis worked in the Coal & Feed industry. His date of birth is listed as April 1847. He was living with his wife of 30 years and their children Wesley F. (age 25), who worked as a painter, Joseph H. (age 23), who worked as a baker, May (age 20), who worked as a chocolate dipper (?), Florence (age 17), Edson W. (age 14), and Richard H. (age 11), the last three children still in school. It is unknown exactly when the family moved from Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska, but it was before September of 1907, because that is when his youngest son, Richard, died.

Daughter May, listed as Melissa M. Poast on her marriage record was born around 1879 in Canada and married Fred E. Moses (son of S. T. Moses and Elizabeth Pritchard)
on November 24, 1904 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. An article in the Omaha Daily Bee, dated June 15, 1906, states she was granted a divorce by Judge Kennedy from Fred on the grounds of extreme cruelty and that her maiden name, Melissa May Poast, was restored to her. May was listed as Mrs. D. H. Randolph of Omaha, NE in her sister Anna Brill's obituary in 1938.

After Francis' death, his wife Matilda was listed on the 1910 census living at 2104 Leavenworth Street in Omaha, where she rented a house and lived with daughter Florence (age 27), who worked as a stenographer for a law office and Jane Cahill (age 27), a boarder. Matilda later moved to Loup City, Sherman, Nebraska where she lived with her daughter Anna Brill until her death in 1928.
