Mae Hattie (Peacock) Battle was born February 11, 1918 in Dooly County, Unadilla, Georgia to the late Lucious Peacock and Hattie Davis Peacock. She was the 5th of 14 children. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Gerald C. Battle on August 1, 1948, to that union two daughters, Connette and Althea and one son Gerald C. Battle, Jr. were born. Mae Hattie attended Snow Elementary School in Dooly County, GA and 8th – 12th grade she attended Gillespie Training School (which was a boarding school) in Cordele, GA. While at Gillespie Training School she studied Nursing and upon graduation she began working as a Nurse. She worked at Gillespie Hospital in Cordele, GA and Americus Hospital in Americus, GA. Mae Hattie also worked in various homes as a Private Duty Nurse while in Georgia. In 1952, Gerald, Mae Hattie and their children moved to Flint, Michigan where he got a job in Buick and she worked at St. Joseph Hospital. She transferred to Hurley Medical Center because they had better pay and better benefits, working in the Operating Room as an Operating Room Technician. She retired from Hurley Medical Center after 23 ½ years of dedicated service. While working at Hurley Medical Center she met Mrs. Josie Williams who witnessed to her about Jesus. Mae asked her more about church and Mrs. Josie invited her to Holbrook Avenue Church of God. She took her children to church and they all became active in church and shortly thereafter her husband followed, and everyone went to church together. Mae Hattie was faithful to church and taught the Junior Sunday School Class for nearly forty years and worked in various departments of the church. Most recently, Mae Hattie attended Living Word Church of God until her health failed.

Mae Hattie leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Althea (Supt. Harold) Jones, Sr.; son, Gerald Jr. (Dr. Valencia) Battle; 11 grandchildren, Irene (Erich) Bearup, Damon Williams, Darryl (Tina) Williams, Jason (Bridgett) Jones, William (Monica) Sams, Jr., Brian Battle, Stephanie Battle-Jones, Geralda (Hosea) Tunstall, Sr., Harold (Fueschie') Jones, Jr., and Christopher Jones; 16 great grandchildren, Bianca and Antonnette Tedford, Darryl Jr., Bailey, Keiran and Rhys Williams, Cameron and Caleb DeHart-Williams, Caleb, Althea, Gabrielle and Dylan Jones, William III and Morgan Sams, Brian Dodd-Battle, Jr. and Isaiah Tunstall; great-great grandson, Brody Williams; 3 caring sisters, Mary Chaney and Dorothy (Ervin) Jones, all of Cordele, GA and Lola Norsworthy of Houston, TX, 5 sisters-in-laws, Annie Bell Peacock of Philadelphia, PA, Doris Peacock of Cocoa, FL, Doretha Peacock of Vienna, GA, Etta Peacock of Cordele, GA and Evelyn (Jackson) Doster of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Battle was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald C. Battle, Sr.; daughter, Connette Sams; granddaughter, Tijra Lyn-Charity Jones; parents, Lucious and Hattie (Davis) Peacock; 4 sisters, Susie, Mattie Ruth, Julia, and Ophelia and 6 brothers, Bill, Chester, Lucious Jr., John, Willie B., and Norman.
