Jonathan served in the American Revolution from 1775-1783. His extensive military record can be found on Ancestry.com, particularly his 36-page pension application. In it, he asks that his discharge paper be returned to him because it is very special and he would like to hand it down to posterity. This is because it is signed by George Washington. See p. 503 of the surname D section of U.S., Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900. Another page of his application is summarized and signed by then commissioner Winfield Scott, who later became a famed general.

Jonathan was the only child of Wait Deming and Hannah Bryan of Goshen, Litchfield County, CT. He had an older step-sister named Prudence from his father's first marriage. He also had step-siblings from his mother's later marriages to Elnathan Ashmun and Levi Crocker. (She was married a fourth time to Stephen Chatfield but had no children.) In 1784 in Goshen, he was appointed guardian (likely to oversee an inheritance) to 15-year-old William Ashman, a younger step-brother. (source: CT probate records for Litchfield County listed under Deming).

Jonathan was a farmer. He married twice: 1) Sarah Richmond (1765-1788) whom he married in 1782 in Goshen, CT; 2) Jane Kelsey (1762-1828) whom he married about 1788/1789. He had children with both wives. About 1795, the family moved to Castleton, Rutland Co., VT. [Jonathan is listed there in the 1800 census]. See his attached profile in the "Genealogy of the descendants of John Deming of Wethersfield, Connecticut" 1904, p. 94, 95.
