Carpenter, Alice (Mam): 68, of Knoxville, passed away early Saturday morning, September 23, 2012.

Alice was a two-time survivor of breast cancer and fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
After God, Alice's purpose for living was her precious daughter, Christy, and the lights of her life, grandsons, Thomas and Tyler, and her extended family. She will be remembered as a selfless gentle spirit who touched innumerable lives. Alice was a Career Level III Teacher at Seymour High School who taught almost three generations of students who will never forget her kindness, love, and caring personality. She was the Yearbook coordinator for 43 years, as well as, graduation and prom coordinator and sponsor of many clubs. Her talents extended to her church family and community. She was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church where she served the Lord as a Sunday School Teacher, worked with the Children's Choir, and helped with numerous Bible School Programs and church activities. Her community was blessed by her many talents. She served as volunteer for the Fantasy of Trees for over 20 years, and she encouraged many people as a member of the Reach to Recovery Program for Breast Cancer. Alice graduated with a B.S. from Jacksonville State University and M.S. from The University of Tennessee. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Thomas (Tommy) Carpenter, a long time employee of the Knox County and City Schools; mother, Bonzie Deakins, father, Robert L. Deakins; and brother, Philip Deakins. Alice is survived by her daughter, Christy; grandsons, Thomas and Tyler; sister, Jequita Gothard; nephew, Trey (Goose )Gothard and his father Gary Gothard; sister, Bonzie; brother-in-law, Lewis Lea and their daughter, Ashton Lea; also cousins, Jimmy and Ida Blalock. Alice wanted to thank special friends, Ric and Beverly Ailey, Janice Miller, Marilyn McCarrell, Becky Bell, Cappy Jett, Lynn Satterfield, Joyce McFall, and Lea Ann Keck for their care, as well as, the staff of Seymour High School and former principal, Greg Clark.

The family will receive friends at Atchley Funeral Home in Seymour, Wednesday, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life at 7:00 p.m. Family and friends will meet at New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. for the interment.
