YORK John Glenn Charleston, 83, died at 7:42 a.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at Miseracordia Convalescent Home. He was the husband of Phyllis (Lehr) Charleston. The couple observed their 62nd wedding anniversary on February 14, 2003. Born November 27, 1919 in York, he was the son of the late Ralph and Laura (Hake) Charleston. He retired on December 27, 1979 after 36-1/2 years from the former Western Maryland Railroad, now CSX Railroad. He was a member of Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, where he sang on the choir, and was a former council member. He was a 1937 graduate of North York High School. He was a pitcher for the Central Baseball League and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Central York County League of Old Timers. He was also an avid golfer at the Briarwood Golf Course and was in the AARP Golf League. He was a member of the North York Lions Club. The funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, 947 N. George Street, York. Rev. Larry R. Bergh, his pastor, will officiate. The burial will be private. A viewing will be held Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market Street, York is in charge of arrangements.
