Henry was the son of Julius Nels and Mary Kathrin Johansen Petersen; the brother of Lee, Bud, Martha, Lou and Pete.
When still quite young he contracted diphtheria and while he survived the illness; he also suffered brain damage. Henry grew physically into young adulthood but his mental age remained that of a young child. He loved his younger brothers and sisters and was always ready to play. Mom has great memories of time spent playing with Henry as she grew up.
