Marine Lance Cpl. Moore was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 364, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton, California as an aircraft mechanic. He died when his CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter went down in the Shatt Al Hillah Canal shortly after take off. The helicopter was conducting a re-supply mission in support of civil military operations. Jason was a 2001 graduate of San Marcos High School where he was on the swim team, worked with the Civil Air Patrol as a youth and had started lessons for a private pilot's license. He always seemed destined for a military life – his family tree was full of service members with combat ribbons from past wars. The Marines especially appealed to him because of their creed of discipline and honor. In January 2001, he joined the military and was deployed with his squadron to Iraq in 2003. He loved driving his Jeep in the desert and going to the beach where he was an avid Boogie boarder. Jason was gung-ho about everything no matter how much of a challenge it was. He was the only person at boot camp who complained when it was over – he wanted more.
