U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Russell H. "Red" Fitzgerald (Retired), 92, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2012, in Conestoga View Nursing Care.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late George B. and Rose (Fritsch) Fitzgerald.

A proud, highly-decorated veteran, Red fought with the U.S. Army in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany during World War II. Red re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1948 and fought in the Korean War and continued to serve until his retirement in 1964.

He then worked for Hamilton Watch before starting his own business in 1967: H & F Tire Service, from which he retired in 1986.

Throughout his military career, Red enjoyed fast-pitch softball and played wherever he was stationed. When Red retired to Lancaster, he continued to referee basketball, softball, and football for many local high schools.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly sixty years: Elsie J. (Barley) Fitzgerald, who died in 2005; his sisters: Ruth (Fitzgerald) Flick and Betty (Fitzgerald) McKinsey; and, his brothers: George and Richard Fitzgerald.

Red is survived by his son: Barry, Sr., husband of Mary Ann (Lea) Fitzgerald of Lancaster; his granddaughter: Brenda of Lancaster; his grandsons: Barry, Jr. and Brett, both of Lancaster; his sister: Florence (Fitzgerald) Ziegler of Lancaster; his sisters-in-law: Melanie (Hoffmeier) Fitzgerald of Lancaster and Kathy (Fisher) Barley of Akron.

A viewing will take place from 07:00 - 09:00 PM on Thursday, September 27, 2012 in the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 E. King Street, Lancaster.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 28, 2012 in the funeral home with The Rev. Dennis Andrew officiating.

Private Interment will be held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
