Cocoa - Mr. J.A. Jackson, widely known local building contractor, died Monday at his home here in Virginia Park, after a short illness.

Jackson, who was a native of the Midwest, came to Cocoa in 1923, and as a member of the contracting firm of Marshall and Jackson, helped build the Indian River Hotel in Rockledge, and the building now occupied by the Barnett national Bank of Cocoa.

Later he was appointed chief of police in Cocoa, but was forced to resign the post a few months later, because of the heart ailment that later caused his death.

He then reentered the contracting business, and only about a month before his death, completed an extensive addition to the Cocoa Lodge of Elks of which he was a past exalted ruler. He also was a past president of the local Kiwanis club and was a director of the Greater cocoa Chamber of Commerce. Besides his widow, he leaves relatives in Oklahoma.

Mr. Jackson was cremated according to Carey Hand Funeral Home Records, Orlando Florida. Register Volume 26, August 11, 1941 - July 4, 1942, p 55 (per contributor Merf #47064479)
