PIONEER WOMAN OF ALEXANDRIA GOES TO HER REWARD
Mother of Carl Anderson Dies at the Age of 74 Years
Mrs. John Anderson (Anna) passed away at five o'clock Monday morning, July 20th, at St. Luke's hospital here at the age of 74 years. Since February she had been in failing health and two weeks ago she underwent a surgical operation at St. Luke's but did not recover.
Anna Greta Larson was born in Melby, Vestergotland [sic] Sweden, on February 20, 1851. April 21, 1870 she was married to John Anderson and two years later they came to America. They stayed several months in New York State and in June of that year they came on to Alexandria, where Mr. Anderson's brothers, Andrew and John, were already located and were engaged in the furniture business here. Mr. Anderson went into partnership with his brothers and for a time he was associated in the furniture business with M. Lundgren, but this firm was later dissolved and Mr. Anderson continued the business alone until his death, which occurred on November 16, 1905.
In the spring of 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Anderson built their first home on the same lots in the city of Alexandria on which the family has always lived since that time. They were charter members of the first Lutheran church organized here, the congregation which later on divided into the First Norwegian Lutheran Church and the Swedish Lutheran churches. Of the charter members of the original Lutheran Church, Mrs. Anderson was the last surviving member. During his life here Mr. Anderson was a leading citizen, having been active in business and civic life. He was for several years an alderman of the city and was twice elected mayor, holding that office at the time of his death. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. The oldest son John J. died April 25, 1911, while serving in the Minnesota state legislature as representative from Douglas County. Another son, William Frederic, and a daughter, Ida Marie, died earlier. One son, Carl, and four daughters: Mrs. A. E. Anderson, Mrs. T. A. Erickson and Misses Alma and Edna survive their mother. All were with her during her sickness and death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the home and the Swedish Lutheran Church; Rev. A. Mattson spoke in Swedish and Rev. P. E. Ording of the Crooked Lake church (Fahlun Lutheran) in English. Miss Marguerite Wright sang "God Giveth His Beloved" and the choir of the Swedish Lutheran Church also sang. Burial was in Kinkead Cemetery.
Mrs. John Anderson was well known and well liked and the many friends she made in this community during her long life here join in expressing their sympathy to the bereaved family.
