FALL RIVER -- Michael J. McMahon, 70, 571 Second St., Fall River, owner of the O'Rourke Funeral Home and a prominent layman in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River, died May 27, 1983 at St. Anne's Hospital. He was the husband of Claire (Brown) McMahon.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late James J. and Mary (O'Rourke) McMahon. He was a nephew of the late Michael O'Rourke, founder of the funeral home at 571 Second St., and was associated with him for 35 years. He was also a Eucharistic Minister of St. Mary's Cathedral and a member of the parish council. He received the Marian Medal, established by the Most Rev. James L. Connolly for outstanding lay service in the diocese. He was a member and a past grand knight of Council 86, Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Clover Club and the Corky Row Club.

Mr. McMahon was a graduate of the Herrick Institute, Fall River, and the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, Boston. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, and was a past vice president of the Fall River Funeral Directors Association, which recently awarded him a certificate for 39 years of service.

He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the India-Burma Theater.

Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Ann Marie Lifrak; a sister, Helen Lawlor, both of Fall River, and a grandson.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the O'Rourke Funeral Home, 571 Second St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, Spring Street. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
